Bitcoin Scam Investigation

Bitcoin Scam Investigation Services | Transaction Tracing, Wallet Analysis & Digital Evidence

If you have lost Bitcoin through an investment scam, fake trading platform, romance scam, impersonation, phishing attack or another form of cryptocurrency fraud, a Bitcoin scam investigation can help establish what happened to your funds and what digital evidence remains available.

Bitcoin transactions are recorded on a public blockchain, which means transaction activity can be examined after funds have been sent. An investigation can examine the movement of Bitcoin, associated wallet addresses, websites, communications and other digital evidence to reconstruct the events surrounding a suspected fraud.

The goal is not simply to follow a transaction. It is to build a documented picture of what happened, where the Bitcoin moved, what evidence connects the activity, and what remains unknown.

What Is a Bitcoin Scam Investigation?

A Bitcoin scam investigation is a digital investigation into suspected fraud or theft involving Bitcoin.

Depending on the circumstances, an investigation may examine:

  • Bitcoin wallet addresses
  • Transaction IDs and hashes
  • Bitcoin transaction history
  • Cryptocurrency exchanges
  • Investment platforms
  • Websites and domains
  • Emails and messages
  • Social-media accounts
  • Telephone numbers
  • Names and aliases
  • Payment records
  • Screenshots and documents
  • Companies and individuals associated with the incident

The investigation can combine blockchain evidence with other digital information to establish a timeline and identify relevant connections.

Importantly, a Bitcoin wallet address does not automatically identify the person controlling it. Blockchain transactions can show movement of cryptocurrency, but connecting an address to a real-world individual or organization may require additional evidence.

Bitcoin Transaction Tracing

One of the most important parts of a Bitcoin investigation is transaction tracing.

For example, an investigation may begin with a transaction supplied by a victim:

Victim → Recipient Wallet → Additional Wallets → Other Services

The investigator examines the transactions that follow and looks for relevant patterns and connections.

The FBI notes that cryptocurrency transactions are permanently recorded on blockchains and can be traced by investigators, although following funds can become more difficult when cryptocurrency moves through overseas exchanges or other jurisdictions. (Internet Crime Complaint Center)

Transaction tracing can therefore help answer questions such as:

Where was the Bitcoin sent?

When was it received?

Where did it go afterward?

Were additional wallets involved?

Did the funds interact with a cryptocurrency service or exchange?

What other evidence may help identify the activity?

Bitcoin Investment Scam Investigation

Bitcoin investment scams can take many forms.

A victim may be approached through social media, a dating platform, email, messaging application or an online advertisement. The person may claim to be a professional trader, investment adviser or representative of a cryptocurrency company.

The victim may then be directed to a website that displays apparently successful investments or profits.

Eventually, the victim is instructed to send Bitcoin.

When the victim attempts to withdraw the supposed profits, the platform may demand additional payments described as taxes, commissions, verification charges or other fees.

A Bitcoin investigation can examine the entire sequence rather than looking only at the final transaction.

That may include the person who made contact, the website used, the communications, payment instructions, cryptocurrency addresses and subsequent movement of the funds.

Fake Bitcoin Trading Platform Investigation

Some fraud schemes use websites designed to look like legitimate cryptocurrency exchanges or investment platforms.

An investigation may examine:

  • The domain name
  • Website content
  • Company claims
  • Contact information
  • Registration information
  • Hosting and technical infrastructure
  • Investment claims
  • Deposit instructions
  • Withdrawal requirements
  • Cryptocurrency addresses
  • Communications with representatives
  • Associated online profiles

This can help determine what information is supported by evidence and what claims made by the platform cannot be independently verified.

What Evidence Should You Preserve?

If you believe you have been the victim of a Bitcoin scam, preserve your evidence before deleting or changing anything unnecessarily.

Useful information may include:

  • Bitcoin wallet addresses
  • Transaction IDs or hashes
  • Amount of Bitcoin transferred
  • Dates and times
  • Screenshots
  • Emails
  • WhatsApp or Telegram conversations
  • Website addresses
  • Social-media profiles
  • Telephone numbers
  • Email addresses
  • Investment account information
  • Payment receipts
  • Bank records
  • Cryptocurrency exchange records

The FBI specifically recommends providing cryptocurrency addresses, the amount and type of cryptocurrency, transaction dates and times, transaction hashes, information about how contact began, communications, websites, applications, telephone numbers and cryptocurrency exchanges when reporting a cryptocurrency scam. (Internet Crime Complaint Center)

Even if you don’t have all of this information, preserve whatever you do have.

Can Stolen Bitcoin Be Traced?

Bitcoin transactions can generally be traced on the blockchain.

However, tracing a transaction does not automatically reveal the identity of the person behind an address.

An investigation therefore needs to distinguish between:

Blockchain evidence

What the transaction records show.

Digital evidence

What websites, communications, accounts and other records show.

Attribution evidence

Evidence that may connect a wallet, account or online identity to a particular person or organization.

Keeping these categories separate helps prevent conclusions from going beyond what the evidence actually establishes.

Can a Bitcoin Investigation Recover Your Money?

This is one of the most important questions victims ask.

Investigation and recovery are not the same thing.

Tracing Bitcoin may help establish where funds moved, but it does not guarantee that cryptocurrency can be recovered.

The outcome can depend on where the funds went, whether they reached a service or exchange, the jurisdiction involved, available legal processes and whether authorities or relevant institutions can take action.

Be extremely cautious of anyone who guarantees that they can recover your Bitcoin for an upfront payment.

The FBI has specifically warned about fraudulent cryptocurrency recovery services that target people who have already lost money. Some recovery scammers claim they can trace or recover funds and then demand additional payments. (Internet Crime Complaint Center)

How Our Bitcoin Scam Investigation Works

1. Initial Case Review

We begin by understanding what happened and reviewing the information you already have.

2. Evidence Collection

Relevant transaction information, communications, websites, documents and other available evidence are organized for investigation.

3. Bitcoin Transaction Analysis

Relevant wallet addresses and transaction hashes are examined to reconstruct the movement of Bitcoin.

4. Digital Investigation

Where appropriate, associated websites, domains, online identities, communications and organizations are examined.

5. Evidence Correlation

Different sources of evidence are compared to identify connections, inconsistencies and significant findings.

6. Investigation Report

The findings are presented in a clear report explaining what the available evidence establishes, what is supported by multiple sources and what remains uncertain.

What Can a Bitcoin Investigation Tell You?

Every case is different, but an investigation may help establish:

  • Where Bitcoin was initially sent
  • How funds subsequently moved
  • Which wallets were involved
  • Whether funds interacted with identifiable services
  • What websites or platforms were involved
  • What communications occurred
  • What identities or organizations were presented
  • Which evidence supports particular conclusions
  • What additional evidence may be required

We do not treat an allegation as a fact simply because it appears online or because a client has been told something.

The evidence comes first.

If You Have Lost Bitcoin

Don’t delete the conversations.

Don’t discard transaction records.

Don’t close relevant accounts unnecessarily.

Don’t send additional money to someone promising guaranteed recovery.

Instead, preserve your transaction information, wallet addresses, communications, websites, screenshots and payment records.

The FBI currently recommends reporting cryptocurrency fraud and providing as much transaction and identifying information as possible. (Internet Crime Complaint Center)
